Good day, all you golf lovers. Another Monday has arrived and we once again have the Weekend Golf Results from around the world.
There is plenty to report on from the latest round of tournaments with everything happening except for the LPGA Tour. Don’t worry, the ladies will return this week.
There was action however on the Ladies European Tour which had an exciting young winner from France. Lydia Ko and Danielle Kang also decided to play. Why wouldn’t you, it was held in Singapore. ‘Nuff said!
Action too from the DP World Tour and LIV.
Let’s get into it.
Tournament Results
SDC Championship
This was the latest tournament on the DP World Tour.
Matthew Baldwin was the somewhat surprise winner in South Africa. I say surprise because it was his first victory on the DP World Tour in 200 starts. Not only did he win but he won with room to spare with a 7 shot cushion.
In 2016, Matthew lost his tour card due to injuries. So coming back like this must have felt so, so good. Also, being only 37, maybe his best years are still to come. I am sure we all hope so. Well played, Matthew.
The SDC Championship was held at St Francis Links, St Francis Bay, South Africa.
Aramco Team Series
The latest offering from the Ladies European Tour was won by Pauline Roussin Bouchard from France.
The field had a sprinkling of world superstars, most notably Danielle Kang from the US and World No. 1, Lydia Ko. They finished 2nd and 3rd respectively but our winner was Bouchard who topped the leaderboard with a 4 shot victory.
Pauline’s victory lifted her 31 places to 61 in the latest worked rankings. She is only 22 so has her whole future ahead of her. I think a few more titles may be coming her way soon.
The event was held at Laguna National Golf Club, Singapore.
Valspar Championship
The Valspar was the latest offering from the PGA Tour, held at Innisbrook Resort, Copperhead Course, Palm Harbor, Florida
As is often the case on the PGA Tour, we had a very strong field. Names such as Tommy Fleetwood, Jordan Spieth, Sam Burns, Webb Simpson, and Justin Thomas were all in the top 10 on the final leaderboard. However, it was 29 year old Taylor Moore who stood proudly at the top with a 1 shot victory from Adam Schenk. Taylor shot a fantastic 4 under par 67 and then had to wait patiently while later starters tried, and ultimately failed to match him.
Taylor is a man on the up. His victory leaves him at 49 in the world, up from 103 last week. His starting ranking at the beginning of the year was 122, so very much heading in the right direction. Another name to look out for maybe?
Liv Golf Tour – Tuscon
Danny Lee from New Zealand won the individual title in Tuscon. He won the title after a 4 man playoff which included Louis Oosthuizen, Brendon Steele, and Carlos Ortiz. Lee holed a 25 foot birdie putt on the 3rd extra hole for victory.
Well done Danny. It was Danny’s first victory since 2015 which came on the PGA Tour and his first LIV title, having only joined up last month. His prize was a cool $4 million to go with another $125,000 which was his share of 3rd place in the team event.
The event was held at The Gallery Golf Club, Tucson, Arizona.
Coming Up
All go on tour this coming week with the following events happening:
- USPGA – WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, held at the Austin Country Club, Texas.
- USPGA – Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championships, held at Puntacana Resort and Club, Dominican Republic.
- DP World Tour – Jonsson Workwear Open, held at The Club at Steyn City, Johannesburg, South Africa
- LPGA Tour – Drive on Championships, held at Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club, Gold Canyon, Arizona.
- LIV Golf Tour – No event this week.
A packed schedule this week then with 2, yes 2 events on the PGA Tour. The 64 man field in the Match Play event alongside the stroke play event in The Dominican Republic.
DP World Tour and LPGA Tour are also in full swing.
However, no LIV event this week, returning on the 31st of March.
Final Thoughts
As I was having a look down the final leaderboard for the Valspar, I did notice a certain Sam Burns with another top 10 finish. If you remember, he is one of my tips for a breakthrough Major win. I am still sticking with that and feel cautiously optimistic it may happen. You do know, should he, Chris Kirk, or Max Homa, come to that, come away with a victory in one of the Major Championships, you will not hear the last of it. I’m not thinking of the US Masters but probably more likely to be the USPGA.
Chris Kirk and Max Homa appear to have taken last week off last week. Undoubtedly they will be back, firing on all cylinders at this week’s tournaments. We will see.
What I am certain about is we will be watching the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm, and Rory McIlroy battling it out at the WDC-Dell Matchplay event. However, matchplay is different and we may see a surprise winner this week. What do you think?
Maybe some slightly less familiar names in the regular PGA Tour event in The Dominican Republic, however, it is a good chance for someone to pick up a title and some very important ranking points.
The Ladies are back on the LPGA Tour and I am enjoying this action more and more. I think we can all agree, the standard of golf being played by the ladies has risen year on year over the last 20 or 25 years. The strength in depth is also there now and some of the tournaments are truly enthralling. Long may that continue.
Thank you for getting to the end of this report. If you have any thoughts on the events of the week, predictions or anything else, come to that, please don’t be scared to leave a comment. We are hoping Golf from my Armchair will eventually become a place where we can all have a civilised debate about everything golf.
Keep swinging.
