Good day, and it is that time of the week again for Weekend Golf Results from around the world.
We had high tension in the WGC-Dell Technologies Matchplay and drama in the LPGA event from Arizona.
Time to get into the results.
Tournament Results
Jonsson Workwear Open
This was the latest tournament on the DP World Tour.
Matthew Baldwin was the somewhat surprise winner in South Africa last week but could only manage to tie for 32nd this. However, it is always good to make the cut when you won the previous week just to keep a little momentum going.
This week though saw Nick Bachem of Germany come through with a comfortable 4 shot victory.
Well played Nick and let’s hope for a good follow up week in the next tournament.
The Jonsson Workwear Open was held at The Club at Steyn City, Johannesburg, South Africa
Drive on Championships
The Drive on Championships was the latest offering from the LPGA Tour, held at Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club, Gold Canyon, Arizona
Well, all kinds of drama early on in this year’s Drive on Championships with Danielle Kang withdrawing mid way through the 1st round and being taken to hospital with a respiratory infection and severe nausea. She revealed later she had been suffering somewhat beforehand but had hoped she could push through the problem. Unfortunately, that was not the case. She does hope to be back playing again after a few days’ rest. Get well soon, Danielle.
Anyway, after all that concern, we had a tournament to be remembered, which went right down the wire with Celine Boutier of France coming out on top in a playoff against Georgia Hall of England.
It was tight all down the leaderboard so well done Celine.
WGC-Dell Technologies MatchPlay
This tournament was the big one on the PGA Tour this week. It featured the top 64 players battling it out in a matchplay format.
The semi finals saw World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler up against Sam Burns and World No. 3 Rory McIlroy facing off against Cameron Young.
However, there were upsets in the air. Rory managed to lose from being 2 up with 3 to play. It went to an extra hole, the 12th, where Young managed to birdie from a bad lie in a fairway bunker.
Young went on to play Sam Burns in the final after Burns knocked our Scheffler at the 21st hole. Another cracker of a match.
So, onto the final. Sam Burns played superbly, winning 6 & 5 after a birdie blitz. It was an amazing result given the players that were in contention and represents one of the biggest wins of Burn’s career.
The event was held at the Austin Country Club, Texas
Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championships
This tournament was also on the PGA Tour for those not taking part in the WGC.
The winner was Matt Wallace of England, who recorded his first ever win on the PGA Tour and first win anywhere in nearly 5 years. Well done Matt.
The tournament was held at Puntacana Resort and Club, Dominican Republic.
Coming Up
All go on tour this coming week with the following events happening:
- USPGA – Valero Texas Open, held at TPC San Antonio, AT&T Oaks Course.
- LPGA Tour – L A Open, held at Palos Verdes GC, Palos Verdes Estate, California.
- LIV Golf Tour – Orlando, Orange County National, Gold Centre and Lodge, Winter Garden, Florida
So, just 3 events this week but everything is now building to the 6th of April when it will be the US Masters. The first major of the year. Excited? I hope so.
Final Thoughts
So, time for me to start feeling confident. You will remember I have chosen 3 players who I think may make a breakthrough and win their first Major this year. They are Chris Kirk, Max Homa, and Sam Burns.
Well, did you notice? The winner of the WGC-Dell Technologies Matchplay was the one and only…….Sam Burns. I would say he is coming into form at just the right time with the US Masters just around the corner, starting on the 6th of April. I must say, I am feeling quietly confident. We’ll see.
The Ladies are back on the LPGA Tour again and I hope Danielle Kang has made a full recovery and is able to take her place in the field. There was also a return to form for England’s major winner, Georgia Hall with Charlie Hull not too far back either. Maybe the Brits are going to launch a Major challenge again this year.
That is it for another week. Plenty of action and excitement from around the world.
Now, of course, we start the build up to the US Masters. One more round on tour and then off to Augusta for the men. Everything else will stop of course so all eyes can be on the magnificently manicured course that is the Augusta National.
Who is going to win this year? Comment below and see who can come closest. My guess is it will be from the top 3 in the world. Namely, Scottie Scheffler who is the defining champion, of course, Jon Rahm or Rory McIlroy. However, watch out for my dark horse, Sam Burns.
I look forward to seeing you back here next week for more Golf Results from around the World.
